1986 Ford Aerostar Where's the fuel filter so I can replace

Engine Performance problem
1986 Ford Aerostar 6 cyl Automatic

Takes real effort to turn over idles rough. Just replaced alternator, has fuel, sure new plugs won't hurt but my manual just skips removal and install of fuel filter. Input greatly needed and appreciated. This chickpicks up qwik but luvs diagrams.

if it's fuel injected, the filter is located on left (driver side) frame rail just behind the engine. On a carb model, it's located on the rear of the carb where the fuel line attaches.
