Your description of how to read the OBD1 codes using a jumper and test light worked great! However, I was confused (never having done this before on any car) by what looked like three long blinks before each set of short blinks. I video recorded the results in case taking this reading would erase the codes in memory, and even though the video is hard to see you can read the various flashes. First there is a Looooong illumination, which I am assuming is the processor getting the information. Then there are long flashes (L) and short flashes (S) thus: L L L SSSSS L L L SSS L L L SSSSS L L SSS L LOOOONG. If I presume the long flashes are just dividers between the useful codes then I read "53". If I read the long blinks as the first half of the code then there are two: 35 and 33. I am presuming that this early system only can output one code and that the "53" is what I am after, but would be a lot happier if you can confirm I am reading those long flashes correctly. It might be helpful for future viewers if this was noted on the website. Thank you!

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

What you listed is interesting because between 2 digit codes, there is usually a pause and not long flashes. With that theory, you have a 53. However, what you described doesn't sound typical and I would be more likely to say 35 and 33. Can you upload what you recorded so I can see what is happening, and let me know what symptoms the vehicle is having? Both codes 35 and 33 are related to the EGR system and 53 is a throttle position sensor. If you tell me the symptoms, I would better be able to determine which of the two components are more likely.

Thanks,
Joe

Thanks for getting back on my first query! You asked for the video, and as it was so hard to read I did it again, this time with black background so the camera can see the light. This time I discovered more detail than before. The pattern is still the same, but there are three different lengths of lamp flashes, not counting the long preliminary, and what I am assuming the end of message indicator. Using (L)ong, (M)edium and (S)hort I get (after the initial continuous light) M M SSSSS L, M M SSS L, M M SSSSS L, M M SSS then very long. I put commas in where I think the different "words" are divided. An additional after signal of M M L M M then continuous pulse I am guessing is a MFG label of some sort. If the M's are number pulses I get: 25, 23, repeat 25, 23. If only the S's count then I get 53 and repeated. Interestingly the 23 and 53 are both related to the same thing. My original problem was what felt like ignition dropout, that is for the three miles I was driving during the first appearance of the problem the (warm) engine died at a stop, which I got restarted but with a a few seconds cranking. Then for the next three miles home it "hiccuped a number of times but never totally stalled. Night time so lights were on, and they never dimmed. I went into this assuming ignition issues, but decided to just park it until I could read the code. It is certainly possible the code is reading some minor earlier occurrence and not the issue at hand. I will try to attach the video of the code reading.

It looks like the video did not attach. I will try to do so here. If it still doesn't work, I will do the whole thing over again with a different browser.

Okay, I got it! No need to get back to me, unless you just want to. I heard that I can just read the code off the check engine light, and that worked. Also, a different "How To" article a friend gave me said when using the test light to clip its test lead to the positive, not the negative side of the battery. I have not tried that yet, but it would explain why I was getting effectively a negative of the signal, the light displaying the spaces between the number pulses rather than the number pulses themselves. Thanks!

I took the car to the shop, got tired of messing with it in the cold. Thanks for your help, at least I understand how the code thingy works now. No need to respond to my query from before. Cheers!
