Under the bonnet was a spray pattern of brownish liquid that was dried up, unsure of what the problem could be.

Hi,

Where was it located under the hood? Was it above the accessory drive belt?

Do me a favor. Because of color, it could be many things. However, since it was a spray, it is likely near where the belt is on the engine. That means it could be dirty coolant, power steering fluid, or oil leaking at the front.

Check the levels in those things and let me know what you find.

Yes, the splash was located nearby to the accessory belts on the engine. The levels on the coolant were below full and power steering was still at full and the oil seemed to be fine as well. So it may be likely to be the coolant.

That is very possible. Take a look through this link. It talks about water pump issues. There is a weep hole on the pump that will leak coolant when the seal/bearing in the pump goes bad. See if this helps you locate the problem:

If you find the pump is bad, first, confirm the model you selected is correct. I' believe they made them through 2003, but it isn't showing. Are you in the US?

If you find the pump is bad, here is a link you may find helpful:

Let me know about the model and the engine size. Hopefully, I will be able to provide specific directions for your vehicle.

Take care,

Joe
