Hello,
It sounds like you have a batter that is low. Can you follow this guide to confirm please?
Check the connections at the battery and at the fuse box, the power cable may be loose. Also check that the dash screws are tight on the bottom left/right of the dash, it grounds through those screws and if they get loose/corroded the dash will act up.

The battery is about three years old. had the starter replaced and alternator checked. all the lights work fine and the gauges too. the battery light comes on at random times.

It sounds like the positive battery cable has a problem. Can you start the car and move the cable around to see if you can get the dash to flicker? Do the negative cable as well do not afraid of tugging on it.
