1981 Fiat Spider spark plug

Whan i ground out my plug to chack for spark I get no spark even though i am getting spark in the wire. But when I hold it 1/16" away I get a spark jumping from the body (threads) of the plug not the electrode to the ground. What could cause this?

could be the location you are trying to ground out the plug .. you need a good clean metal surface .. also try replacing the plugs
