2003 Fiat Punto Engine Temperature

After the engine has warmed up the temperature gauge rises and falls between quarter and half. Is this normal or is something wrong? I think the fuel consumption may alo have increased, but I may just be being paranoid as the price has gone up recently.

check thermostat is good .. flush cooling system for blockages/air pockets
