Engine Performance problem

i have just purchased a fiat punto sporting and from the 1st time i drove it, it shudders and jerks when i drive it. when asking the previous owner about this he sed everything was fine with the car when he sold it! we have put some oil in an bought some fuel injector cleaner for the car. what could the problem be?
