1995 Other Fiat Models Battery charging caused lights to com

I was charging the battery on my Ducato van and switched on the ignition to check the fuel level. Next thing i notice the side lights have come on and the light switch is off!!??
Have i fried something as i had to remove the fuse to get the lights off.
