Husband replaced water pump and fan clutch in Oct 2019 due to small leak and over heating issue. As soon as he did this car started roaring (sounds like it's running at 4,000 RPM's, but dash shows 2,000) and will not down shift and accelerate and is running like an elephant is on it's back. Similar sound to when car is warming when very cold outside, but it is constant. Taken to dealership twice cannot find anything wrong. Most recently was told; probably bad fan clutch and to replace again. Replaced and no change. Please help! Have had the car 10 years and 127,000 miles and it runs great! Except for this small issue that started a few months ago! I love my car and can't afford a new one. But my hubby and I are stumped! Thanks in advance.

So your vehicle has a viscous fan drive which means it has a silicone in side the unit that as it heats up it engages the fan. Then when the air coming across the radiator is hot enough there is a spring that will expand and engage the high fan speed setting. This is when the roaring noise is the loudest.

So if you are replacing the fan clutch, we just need to make sure we are replacing this unit pictured below.

If you are then does the fan stay on high even during a cold start? Meaning first thing in the morning the fan is roaring?

Lastly can you get a recording of the fan when it is running to help us try to identify something because this is an isolated unit and will run the fan based on these two components. Thanks

It sounds like you know what I'm talking about! Thank God! No. When I turn it on and its cold. It will "roar" for a few minutes. But that has been pretty typical. It will "roar" until about the end of my street.1/8 of a mile or so and then I can feel it downshift. So to speak and it runs as normal for up to 10 miles or so. But. If I drive to the supermarket.1/2 mile. Do my shopping. Start it up. It will "roar" all the way home. Also.I will drive it normal to a drive thru. Runs fine. Until I pick up the items and the window and go to drive home. It will "roar" the whole way home. So it is impacted sometimes by turning the engine off (supermarket not far distance) or by idling (drive thru engine running the whole time).
