Can the fan clutch engagement issue be intermittent if going bad or would it always be engaged if bad or failing?

Hi,

It can be intermittent. It can be a fluid issue or an electrical issue since the fan is electrically actuated. The fan clutch has three main elements, a fluid chamber, reservoir chamber, and clutch actuator valve/fan speed sensor. The actuator valve and speed sensor are controlled by the power-train control module.

I attached a pic below. Check to make sure the connection at the actuator is clean and tight.

Also, take a look through this link. It describes common symptoms related to a failing fan clutch.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe
