Exhaust loud

My exhaust is very loud. I was told a cover or screen on the exhaust is missing and needs to be welded on. What would that exactly be called? Is it the heat shield?

The heat shield won't cause a leak to make it loud. I'm not sure which component you are referring to, but the only thing I can think of with something that appears like a screen would be a flex pipe. Can you upload a pic of the component?
