Is red silicone a good substitute for a metal gasket when joining an exhaust to the muffler?

Hello,

Although the red Resistant To Vehicle fluids(RTV) is high temperature RTV, it is an absolutely horrible choice for attaching a muffler to exhaust pipe. Mufflers and exhaust pipes, or, in fact any exhaust piece to any exhaust piece must either be welded together, or slipped together and held together with muffler clamps. A lot of pre made exhaust pieces have flanges with corrugated gaskets that fasteners bolt the two exhaust pieces together. RTV will simply melt, contaminate any electrical components, like O2 sensors, and the exhaust pieces will simply fall apart. Please keep us informed as to what happens.

Thanks,
Alex
