My mechanic replaced my ignition with Toyota OEM Ignition and Keys because my original keys would no longer turn in the ignition lock. Prior to that I had no starting problems. I believed that my 1998 Toyota Avalon has an engine immobilizer and transponder chips in the two keys (neither of which is apparently a master key). My mechanic talked to a contact at Toyota and they told him that my car doesn't have an engine immobilizer and the two replaced keys for the new ignition do not require programming. A lock smith who examined my ignition lock said the same thing. It appears that the 1998 Toyota Avalon XL does not have an engine immobilizer, but the 1998 Toyota Avalon XLS does. Can you confirm this?
However, since the ignition and keys were replaced, my mechanic and I have experienced problems starting my car. Sometimes it starts fine. Other times it will start but then immediately shut off. Other times it won't start at all. It always cranks. My mechanic says the starter is fine. What should we be looking for as the cause(s) and cure(s) of this starting problem?

Hi,

Some of these vehicles did have an immobilizer and others did not. I believe it was an option.

Also, an immobilizer won't act this way if it was set. If you have one and it wasn't reprogrammed, it would never start.

When it doesn't start, does the starter engage or does nothing happen?

Let me know.

Joe, Thank you. I don't know what you mean by the immobilizer being "set" nor being "reprogrammed". Yes, I believe that the starter engages. The engine always cranks. Sometimes it will start smoothly with no problems. Sometimes it starts and then almost immediately shuts down, Sometimes it won't start at all. Regardless my mechanic is now convinced that my car has the immobilizer. Toyota has since acknowledged that the new ignition furnished by Toyota s not immobilizer compatible and the keys they furnished lack the transponder chip. Toyota no longer has available an immobilizer compatible ignition for at least my car. My mechanic determined that the car started and stayed running as long as the old key was in contact with the new key and/or ignition. As soon as the old key fell into a different position on the key ring the engine would stop and/or not start at all. My mechanic's solution is to take the car to a locksmith who will re-key the ignition to accept my old keys with transponder chips that will be re-coded to work with the new ignition. That is preferable to the somewhat cheaper option of getting blank new keys with programmed transponder chip and having them keyed to fit the new ignition which would require me to carry my old key to unlock the doors and my new key to start the car.

Hi Bill, if that is the case, certainly they gave you the wrong ignition switch. However, once the vehicle is running, it shouldn't shut off when the key is moved. If that was the case, it would be a hazard if the circuit failed while driving.

Regardless, let me know if this resolves the issues. I'm interested in knowing.

Take care,

joe

Joe,

Yes re-keying the new ignition to work off the old keys and re-programming the old keys to the new ignition solved the problem. Thanks for your assistance and interest.
