Good day to you all. My car shifts erratically and bangs when coming to a stop and when accelerating. In the morning when driving the car it shifts smoothly but later in the afternoon when the outside temperature is hot it begins to slips and shifts roughly. It will also accelerates slowly from stop on engaging the throttle and when it comes to a stop it bangs and and thud. When I checked the transmission fluid it appears stained with dark substances. On OBD scan it throws out the following codes: P1381, P1491, P0141, P1456, P0730. I want to know if my auto transmission is going bad to worst, do I have to change any of the shift solenoids, or is the problem internal within the transmission that is beyond repairs. The last time this happens was in 2013, we only changed one of the solenoids ( I think A and B) and everything returns to normal shifts. But this seems to be worst than the previous one.
Please any opinion or suggestion will be helpful. Thanks and God bless.

N/B: please take note that the D4 light didn't blink. It all appears normal. No problem with the light

P1456 - EVAP Emissions Control system leakage
P1381 - Cylinder Position Sensor
P1491 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation EGR valve insufficient lift
P0141 - Secondary Heated O2 sensor
P0730 - Problem in Shift Control System

I would focus on the P0730. I attached the testing for this so you can run through it. Let me know what you find and we can go from there. Thanks

Thanks for replying, I am really grateful. I actually consulted a gear specialist in auto transmission, he was able to remove the three solenoids attached and then inspects it for any damages. He discovered the shift valve was malfunctioning and wasn't clicking very well so he has to able to correct it. He told me to change the transmission fluid to another brand probably dexron 111 oando products, that the present transmission fluids inside the gear is too watery.
I am planning replacing the fluids next week. Presently the car drives smoothly no sudden shifts from one gear to another but the distance is just few kilometers from my home to office. I will get back to you after all is done.
Thanks.

After replacing the auto transmission fluids with new one I have to put the car to test by driving it at longer distances to see how well it will function especially under hot external temperature outside.

How are you? I just changed the old automatic transmission fluids yesterday. It all appears watery. I drove the car to a place up to 15km - 20km today but when going there was no hard shifts, but when coming back from the journey I notice the temperature gauge kept rising above the half mark and then starts dropping on approaching home. What may likely cause this sudden overheating? Any suggestion will help greatly.
Thanks

If the temperature gauge only gets to half way and then goes back down then that is not technically overheating. This may be coming up higher than it did but the fact that it comes back down is the cooling system is working. I would just keep an eye on it and make sure the temp gauge is not getting higher than 3/4 of the way up. If it starts to get there, shift to neutral and let it come back down and then we need to look into the cooling system.

When is the last time you had it serviced? It may just be old coolant like the transmission fluid was.

Happy New Year to you. Thanks for your useful suggestion, actually is been long I changed the coolant probably going to 3 - 4 years now. I will try to flush it out tomorrow and replace it with a new coolant. Is it normal for the automatic transmission gear to produce some sound, like a little whining sound. Are they chances that the coolant can get mix up with the auto transmission fluids. I have been using the car same engine, the same auto transmission for 8 years now. I want to buy some time to save money to get used engine for the car. I am looking forward saving $450.00 to $500.00 (N160,000) for this.
Hoping to hear from you soon.

Compliment

Happy New Year.

If the coolant and trans fluid are mixing then the coolant will look milky and not reddish in color.

I would just flush the coolant and then keep an eye on the transmission fluid. If the coolant and trans fluid are mixing it could be a faulty transmission cooler. However, I would just check the fluid regularly and see if it looks light pink or milky. If it does then you are going to have to find the leak.

Okay, I will flush the coolant and see how it goes. Just hope the temperature won't go up again. I will give you feedback on the outcome.
Sir, can you provide me a picture/image of the transmission cooler where it is located in Honda Accord 1998 model?

Thanks

I could have swore I put a picture of that on the last post but clearly it is not there. It is part of the radiator. You should see transmission lines going to the bottom of the back of the radiator.

Please keep me posted. Thanks

How are you? The car is still shifting erratically during upwards and downward shifts. I think I should look forward replacing only the automatic transmission. Or I should give it another trial by replacing all the solenoids and the shift valves. The engine is still working perfectly excepts for minor leaks underneath the engine. When I checked the transmission fluids after settling the car for some hours, I noticed some substances either brown or black within the transmission fluids.
Thanks for your usual cooperation on this issue hoping to hear from you soon. We have a lot to discusses on this.

It can't hurt in changing them but if it were me, I would just nurse it along until you can do the entire unit. More than likely the clutches and seals are going to need to be replaced and putting the solenoids and valves in will require you to go in again so I would just wait and do it all once.

However, you can't make a wrong decision here.
