Engine runs-on

Dear sir, I am in South Africa so the mileage is in kilometers (sorry). This is the 160i model. The engine runs-on when the vehicle is switched off. My scanner cannot access pre-2000 and when I bridge the pins on the diagnostic plug I get no fault codes reading the flashing MIL. This engine does not have a distributor. Timing is regulated by the ECU. I do know that the head gasket was replaced recently.
Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

It sounds like you have a vacuum leak allowing air to enter the engine after shut down.
