Engine stopped running

I was driving a car stopped accelerating. I pulled over and engine stop running. After a minute, I restarted car but when I put in gear, it shut off. I waited another few minutes and started the car. I put in gear and car ran but is running rough. It seems to want to backfire.

This sounds like a classic crankshaft angle sensor that is going out. Here is a guide to show you what you are in for when doing the job:
