This vehicle was one of the first years with OBD II so if you are going to turn the check engine light off then we are going to have to check the codes first.

If you still have codes then the light will remain on however, if you suspect the vehicle has been repaired and you just want to clear the codes and be sure of that, then you can disconnect the battery for 5 minutes.
However, doing it this way will clear the keep alive memory which will force the vehicle to relearn the different monitors. It will do this but it will take time to go through the needed drive cycles. So if you have a vehicle inspection coming up then I would not recommend doing this as you will fail and have to get all the monitors to run again.
