What is the part that connects the motor to the transmission and holds the starter on? Can it be fixed? I think it's the flywheel housing can it be fixed or what needs to be done?

This is called the transmission case or bell housing. Unfortunately this cannot be repaired. That requires replacement of the transmission case at the least but I would just replace the entire transmission.

Let us know if you need more information. Sorry for the bad news.
