If the check engine light staying on when the engine runs? If it does, you first need to scan the computer to identify diagnostic trouble codes. Here is a quick video that shows how that is done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner. However, often times a parts store will do it for free. If the car is safe enough to drive, that is what I would suggest.
Now, the description you gave can be many different things. For example, low fuel pressure, a major engine vacuum leak, a plugged catalytic converter and the list goes on.

Now, what I would suggest is checking fuel pump pressure, check for a vacuum leak, and check for a plugged catalytic converter. I will provide links to help you through these tests.
