As I turned a corner my car all of a sudden cuts out had no power and on the dash it stated engine malfunction. As I turn the key it just makes a loud screeching noise from the engine. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

There are literally dozens of possibilities for this scenario, but I would start with the basics like checking the oil level and coolant levels, and have a look under the vehicle for any leaks or foreign objects. The message "engine failure" will come on any time there is a loss of engine revolutions while the power-train control module is commanding normal operation. Also have a look at the accessory belt on the front of the engine, the low torque of this engine can be susceptible to an accessory or pulley locking up and causing the engine to stall. I've attached an illustrated picture of the accessory drive system in case you have an issue with this.

There could be many things. You indicate a noise when you turn the key. Is it possible for you to record it with your phone and upload it for me to hear?

Next, if the engine light came on, you need to scan the computer to determine what diagnostic trouble codes are stored. Here is a quick video showing how that is done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but often times a parts store will lend or rent one to you. This step really needs done.

Let me know. Also, let me know if the vehicle is still able to be started. If possible, please upload the noise it is making. It may point me into the right directions.

Take care and I'll watch for your reply.
