Engine light came on, so took it to auto parts store and got a code P0301. so what should I do?

That is a cylinder 1 misfire. The first thing I would suggest is to remove the spark plug and inspect its condition. If you haven't tuned the vehicle in a long time, the plugs may be getting bad.
Also, confirm there is not damage to the spark plug wire.
Here is a link that explains in general how a tune up is done. It shows what are called coil over ignition coils. Your vehicle will have a distributor cap and wires.
