I was driving my car home from work and as I was going to shift into second. I noticed a knocking sound coming from the engine in the 3k-4k rpm range. I drove it the next day and the same thing. But when I was coming home from work it was around the 2k-5k range and much louder. The car has need parked since.

Before we go looking for the serious stuff, check the vibration damper, (harmonic balancer), to see if the center bolt is loose or the hub is cracked. Usually you'll feel the looseness when you tug and wiggle on it.
