Engine shut off while driving and pil light came on?

I had no idea the oil was low as I just bought the car. Drove fine but sounded like something was up with the undercarriage and then about an hour later the car shut off and pil light came on and then it shut off and when we put oil in it refused to start.

Hi,

Was there any knocking or ticking from the engine before it turned off? Also, how low was it? How much oil did you have to add to fill it?

At this point, what happens when you crank the engine?
