Having trouble nailing down what years I can pull a motor from for my F150. It's a 1999 with 8th digit L Vin 5.4 2 valve.

There are two versions of that engine depending on which heads it has on it. The non power improved and the power improved version. The difference makes it so that they don't interchange very well with the stock ECM.
If it's the base model engine the late 98-99 5.4 are the only ones that will fit. If it's the later 1999 with the better heads then you have from late 1999 through 2001 in the 2 valves.
The easiest way to tell is to look at the head casting numbers, the PI heads have that in the casting number. Like XL3E-2CDD-PI as the right hand head. While the non-PI are F75E-C20A
8 digit.
I suspect it's the non-PI engine which limits the years for swap to that design. If you go to
car-part. Com and enter your vin number it might give you some extra options.

Ford didn't make it real easy when they started changing the engine around in those years. You could have the good 2 valve, the HO 2 valve or the three valve engines, which I would avoid like the plague they are.
If you need any other info please don't hesitate to return. Thank you for using 2CarPros

The three valve would be an obvious difference under the valve cover, but what should I look for other then the PI in the casting number when figuring out what motor to look for?

The 2 valves are easy to tell apart from the Tritons. Year wise and if it has the PI casting suffix on the heads are the telltale differences in the 2 valves. What is the issue with your current engine? If it's just wear you might consider rebuilding it unless you can get an engine for a lot less.

Sounds like it may have had water in it and froze. Not a good thing. Look it over and see what it has for castings, they may have stuck a PI in it and that would make it a bit easier to find a replacement. Then you just need to determine if you want a used engine or a re-man. If the truck is in good shape you might opt for that, but a couple things to check over first. Look over the frame real close, they went to the fully boxed frames and they have a bad habit of rusting out from the inside. A few taps with a hammer would show that. Then be sure the body and box mounting channels are good for the same reason. If they are good and the body solid, a re-man might be a good option, most have a 3 year warranty vs a used 30-90 day, but they will be more money.

My 1999 5.4 F150 does have the PI heads and I've decided to go with a remanufactured engine. What all casting numbers do I need when ordering the replacement engine?

Usually it depends on what the builders have on hand. I can normally get an engine in about 2 days, unless it's some odd one where there are none on hand. Then they will sometimes have me ship the core in, they go through it and ship it back. That can be a mess if the core engine has problems in the hard parts like a cracked block or bad head.

Okay, so new problem on my 19999 f150. On the fuel rail there is a valve to release pressure and it is leaking. Can I tighten it like a bicycle tire valve or replace the internal valve?

That isn't really to release the pressure it's a test port. If it is leaking they can be tightened or replaced. You need the correct one though as they are high pressure and fuel resistant using viton seals.
