I just got the transmission rebuilt and drove it home. Stopped to check the mail and it shut off on me, won't start. After that had to be towed home. The starter was bad changed that still nothing. Will not turn over but have power. What could be wrong? Vapor locked or do I need a new motor?

Hi,

Since the transmission was out, I am questioning a few things. First, when you say it, "will not turn over but have power" do you mean the starter will not engage? If the starter is engaging and turning the engine without it starting, is there any evidence if it trying to start? For example, do you hear it firing and trying? Is there anything other you can think of that may help me diagnose the issue?

Here is a link that explains the most common causes of a crank no start condition. However, I'n not sure if that is what is happening. I'm adding it in the event I'm correct.

Let me know if that is at all helpful and anything you can think of that may help me.

Take care,
Joe

We put a new starter on and it won't turn over at all. No clicking no nothing. It has a new battery. I picked it up from the shop and the oil gauge was working then it quit. We stopped and put gas in it and the oil gauge started working again then quit again. So we stopped and checked the oil and it was full. So we drove it home. It didn't make any noise all the way home but the check engine light came on after we put gas in it, but it always did before after I put gas in it. I even bought a new gas cap and it still did it. But we got in town I got out to check the mail. It was still running when I got out, I came back like a minute later and it had shut off. So I tried to start it and the starter wouldn't engage so we put a new starter on it. And like I said now it wont turn over. My boyfriend took the plug out between the bell housing and transmission and tried to turn the motor but he said it wont turn. Now we are stuck. And suggestions would help.

Amanda,

It sounds like he was checking to see if the engine locked up. If that was the case, you would still hear the starter engage (click) but it wouldn't be able to turn the engine.

Okay, since we know the battery is good and the starter is new, then there are a few fuses I need checked. All are located under the hood in the power distribution box. See pics 1 and 2.

I would also like you to check the starter relay. It is in pic 2 as well.

Here are links you may find helpful for testing. If you have a relay in the box with the same part number, switch them to see if there is a difference.

If you find that the fuses are good, the relay is good, and there is power to all, then I need you to check if there is power making it to the purple wire on the starter. It is the smaller wire on the solenoid and should only get 12v when the key is in the start position.
