Hello, My name is Lou, there are thousands off reasons the light is on but there are 2 important indicators.
1. If the check engine light is flashing then the engine is misfiring and needs to be shut off or damage will occure
2. Its a emissions failure or a engine issue that will cause excess emissions.

The car will not always run bad for the check engine light to come on. That is a common misconception. So what I can recommend is at your earliest convenience head over to your local parts store and they can read the codes at no charge and hopefully they can advise from there what to do. BUT I always recommend having the codes diagnoses at a shop as most parts stores only can guess at the actual issue. Hope this helps Lou.

YOU CAN HAVE THE CODES SCANNED AT A POPULAR AUTO PARTS STORE, USUALLY THIS IS A FREE SERVICE (SUCH AS AT AUTOZONE)

YOUR COMPUTER HAS IDENTIFIED THERE IS A FAULT OF SOME KIND, AS IT WAS DESIGNED TO DO, IT MIGHT RANGE FROM A BAD O2 SENSOR ROBBING YOU OF FUEL EFFICIENCY OR MAYBE AS SIMPLE AS A GAS CAP NOT SEALING CORRECTLY.

IF YOU GET IT TESTED/ CHECKED (LIKE ANY CONCERNED OWNER OF A MULTI-THOUSAND DOLLAR MACHINE SHOULD) WRITE DOWN THE EXACT CODE NUMBERS (NOT JUST WHAT THEY SAY THEY MIGHT MEAN, THEY CAN BE INTERPRETED IN DIFFERENT WAYS)
