For some reason my car won’t cut off after I turn the ignition off. I’m trying to figure out what the problem is. Before I go waste money.

Hi Will,

How long will it run? Does it run after you pull the key out and does it keep running as if the key were still in the on position?

If it just runs for a short time after you shut it off then most likely you have leaking fuel injectors. Even though you shut the engine off, if there is still fuel leaking into the cylinders, the engine is hot enough that it can ignite this fuel and keep the engine running. It is called dieseling. It is not common on fuel injected vehicles because you usually don't have multiple injectors leaking at the same time. However, that is why we need to clarify how long it keeps running.

How do you get it to shut off if it continues to keep running as if the key was left on?

Let me know and we can go from there. Thanks

Thanks for the reply. After I switch the car off it continues to run as if I’m going to leave and go somewhere. It doesn’t cut off. I had to remove the fuel pump fuse for it to cut off. It was on for at least fifteen minutes before I decided to do that. It probably would’ve stayed on. I tried turning the key on and off but that didn’t work at all. Yes it runs after I pull the key completely out. Yes just like it’s in the on position. I couldn’t figure out what it was. It did it for the first time today. I thought something was wrong with the ignition switch or some. I’m not a car expert so I don’t know. Please let me know.

Yes. This is most likely an ignition switch or circuit issue that does not see the key position change so it just keeps on running as if nothing happened. This can be confirmed by using a scan tool and monitoring the ignition position in the ECM and I am sure you will see that the ECM does not see the ignition position change.
