Hi,
Oftentimes, people have repairs done and don't turn them in to the insurance company. They do this to prevent a rate increase, or they may not have insurance.
Now, I may have confused you. An OBD2 and CAN scanner are basically the same things. No need to get two different things. You just need an OBD2 scan tool that can read codes from the CAN.
If you want to spend a good bit more, there is a bi-directional scanner. This is the newest (I believe) on the market. In this design, the scan tool doesn't just receive information from the different modules, but it can input info. Often times this is beneficial to check things like solenoids, sensors, and so on by forcing them to actuate.
If you look below, I picked a basic OBD2 can-bus scan tool on Amazon. Take a look at it and let me know if you have questions. Also, please understand, I don't own this tool. I just picked one that described what is needed.
Let me know.
Joe
