I left key in on position all night until battery drained out. Jumped battery next morning and now engine will not start and when it does it spits and sputters and back fires. Up until this matter the engine ran like a champ.

If this is a base model with points ignition, check the points, condenser and coil. Leaving the key on with points will do damage if they are closed.
If it has the transistor ignition, check the pulse amplifier and coil, for the same reason.

It does not have points or condenser, but was thinking the same thing problem is under distributor cap. Yep, I was thinking with voltage going to components all night it fried something like I said it ran like a champ until this happened. Thanks a lot for your time and wisdom.

Yeah, the pulse amplifiers do not like it when the transistors are held in a constant on state.
Good luck and enjoy that vehicle.
