Hi,
Has removal of the thermostat taken care of the problem? If it has, then suspect the thermostat was bad. Honestly, you need to make sure the engine reaches normal operating temp with in a reasonable amount of time. If it doesn't, it can cause new problems.
I have always been one to believe if it was designed to have something, it should. I suspect if you replace the thermostat with a new one and possibly flush the cooling system, it would be fine.

Take care,
