Wheels popping and locking up

My car was making noise like I had a CV axle going out. Headed to a place I could work on it I heard and felt a loud pop then engine free wheeled and had lots of popping and jerking. While being pulled onto to truck bed wheels kept popping and locking up. Once home I jacked up passenger side and removed wheel. Axle seems okay. But where it goes into transmission flops around in transmission housing. And when I turn it it pops and locks.

Hi Donnasman,

Sounds like the inner CV joint. Number 1 and 2 in the attachment. However, if you can get a video of the part that you see flopping around I can confirm this and give you a clear repair direction.

Okay. Great. The first part that you were grabbing circled in picture below, was the inner CV joint. I couldn't quite tell where the clunking noise was coming from when you were spinning but if this was coming from the same part, I would just replace the entire axle shaft. I circled this part in the second picture.

Please let me know if you need anything else but it sounds like you found the "smoking gun" on this one. Thanks

The noise is coming from the transmission not the axle. The entire axle shaft is turning fine.

Okay. Then this is the output shaft and differential that is inside the trans-axle (transmission). More than likely it is a bearing or something spline to the axle. Here is an exploded view of what is inside the trans that the axle connects to.

Unfortunately, the only way to find out is to remove it and open it up.
