I have just replaced control arm on passenger side and it seems like the driveshaft backed out from the coupling about half an inch. The wheel spins by hand on either side and when I put it in gear (on jack stands) the wheels spin slowly. I have not tried driving the car since I still have the driver side control arm to replace. Is this normal?

No, you probably do not have the axle in all the way on that side there should be a clip that engages on axle so it will work. Just try to push it in you will probably hear the clip click and will take some effort. Picture is similar to what you have just other side.
