I bought the truck listed above 1500 Club cab short bed. I knew that it had transmission problems when I bought it the man said that he purchased it from an elderly couple who had to overfill the transmission fluid almost a whole gallon the linkage is messed up on the gear shift and when you try to put it in park it just makes this horrible grinding noise. So, I have to turn the engine off and put on the e-brake because it won't engage in park. It drove a very small distance right after I bought it but when I put it in gear in any position there is no movement or sound of engaging at all. Do you have any idea what it could be? Also, I think it's stuck in 4-wheel drive. The engine runs great and has 166,000 miles on it. Recently my friend was able to get reverse and drive to work but it didn't go very far and it sounded horrible. I don't know what he did to get it to work, but I can ask VIN#1B7HF13Y21J276619?

It sounds like the rear differential is bad, to confirm, when you put the truck in gear have someone look under the truck to see if the driveshaft is spinning. This would cause the grinding sound you have described and make it difficult to put the transmission in park. Also, if you could upload a short video of the sound in your response, I could tell for sure what's going on. When putting the truck in park, try to shut the engine off first to see if goes into park easier. Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can hear the noise? That would be great. You can upload it here with your response.

Yes, I can do that. If it is the rear differential, is it expensive to fix? What will it take to fix it? Is it an easy fix? I will upload a video with a sound ASAP. And I don't think that it will actually let me put it in park all the way. I don't think it actually will engage all the way in park that's why I have to use my e-brake. Thank you for your response and I will upload that video as soon as I can.

Okay, if the driveshaft turns and the wheel don't the rear differential will need to be rebuilt, or you broken an axle. Here is a video that will show you how to check the axles. The video is not your truck be the procedure is the same.

Let us know what happens and please upload pictures or videos of the problem.
