My car cranks up but when you put it in drive it automatically cuts off.

Hi,
When you place it in gear, does the vehicle jump or jerk before it stalls? I ask because that is a symptom of a faulty torque converter.
The torque converter is what separates the engine from the transmission when the vehicle is stopped. If it doesn't separate the two, this can happen.
