My AC compressor needs to be replaced. I want to do it myself and am wondering about refrigerant recapture and recharge. The difference in cost for me is probably 500$, so I am hoping I'm not crazy. Thanks J.O.K.

only certified HVAC techs should discharge an A/C system...if you do wish to try this you would need the appropriate equipment to discharge, recover and recycle the refrigerant.

if you can have someone discharge and then recharge it then yes there is no reason you couldn't replace it yourself if you have the correct mechanic tools (ratchets, etc...).
