Once the Check Engine light comes on, there is at least one diagnostic fault code stored in the engine computer's memory. Do not disconnect the battery until that code has been read and recorded or that valuable information will be lost.
The code(s) will direct the mechanic to the circuit with the problem. A common cause of a no-start condition is a defective camshaft position sensor. Also, on some 4 cylinder engines, the dowel pin between the camshaft and sprocket can shear off allowing the sprocket to turn a little on the camshaft. The camshaft position sensor picks that up and shuts the engine down to prevent some of the valves from hitting the pistons, a very costly repair.
