2004 Dodge Stratus Overheating

My car has overheated 3 times in the last week, but only while driving in the city. This doesn't happen every time I drive it, and it hasn't happened while driving on the interstate at all. I typically drive between 10 & 15 miles each outting. I had the oil changed and coolant filled 4 days ago. I was told by a mechanic that it's possibly the head gasket and if so, I'd need a new one. Is this the only possiblity?

Start by testing or replacing the thermostat-recheck coolant level
