1999 Dodge Stratus Timing Belt/Bent Valves

My timing belt broke, and my boyfriend was able to replace it, but he said that the valves are bent. He had a hard time removing the bottom gear, and it took many hours rather than two. Are the valves really difficult to replace? And does my car have a noninterference engine?
