The car has a front end shake that you can feel thru the sterring wheel at idle and as yo increase speed the entrie front end, dash etc are shaking violently. It let's up but not cease when lifting off throttle. Balanced and rotated tires to no effect, checked alignment, no obvious axle issues when run while on jack stands. Mechanic does no think it is motor mount but I cannot see the driver side upper mount. Mecahnic wants to change left and right axles but he's not entirely sure that will solve the problem.

Hi:
It sounds like the motor mounts have collapsed allowing the steel mount to vibrate against the frame.

Have him check all mounts before replacing axles.
