trying to find out why we can't get it to go back in time? It over heated & was shut down right away.

Which engine, 4 or 6?

What timing are you doing? Turning the distributor / timing light, or timing belt / cam&crank sprockets?

Setting base timing requires disconnecting the coolant temperature sensor.

If you are doing that and still can't set it, check the belt and sprockets versus their reference marks.
