Engine Mechanical problem
1992 Dodge Spirit 6 cyl Automatic 185000 miles

Hi,
The problem I am having is after about 20 mins of my car running, its starts to chug. When I accelerate sometimes there is no power to get around the corner then all of a sudden it kicks in. When I am idling I can hear a putter out of my exhaust that sounds like a machine gun. I still runs fine but very annyoing after awhile.

Hi:
Is it backfiring through the exhaust? If so, you could have a problem with the exhaust valves.

Have you had the computer scanned for codes? If not, take it to an Auto Zone or other nationally recognized parts store and ask if they will scan the computer. Most of the stores will do it for free so they can sell you a part. If it has a code, let me know what it is.

Are there any other symptoms? If not, and there are no codes, I would suggest having the a compression test done.

Let me know what you find.
Joe

Yes it backfires through the exhaust and there is a tremendous loss of power when I try to make a corner. It feels like the car trys to push itself but it just wont go. Sometimes the car even shakes when I decelerate. Other then that the car starts perfect. Goes on a straight strech fine. There is only roughly about 180,000 on it. Ive done everything I can for the upkeep except a new fuel filter.
