Is the a/c still blowing cool? There are a few things that make one do that. If the evaporator gets to cold it will kick out the a/c clutch to prevent it from freezing. Most cars do this under normal operation. If it is low in freon it will kick out due to the low pressure switch. If the system is getting to hot, ( fans not working or clogged condensor) the high pressure switch will kick it out.
