EGR can be cleaned, and is a recomended procedure.
Remove the EGR valve from vehicle, and soak the non electrical portion in solvent over night, using a probe, clean ports being very careful not to mar the piston (valve) inside. Don't bother soaking it in more than 1 inch of solvent, the carbon will actually wick the solvent up, and loosen up.
That's how to clean it. If the check engine light stays on after a reset, get yourself a repair manual, or go a library that has one for your vehicle, and read on how to check, clean, or replace the throttle valve.
If all else fails, replace the EGR valve, which can be fairly expensive.
