front axle got hot from lack of gear oil now both front tires lock up when in 2 wheel drive going foward but not reverse wheels turn when 4 wheel driveis engaged. i looked at gears they r not broken still turn so why does it lock up and how do i repair so it will work?

If you remove the front drive shaft, does the same thing happen?
