2005 Dodge Ram drive train noise

While driving down the road in 2 wheel drive ther is agrinding clunking noise but when up put it in 4 wheel drive it stop's.I crawled underneath the truck and turned the front drive shaft while it was in 2 wheel mode it sounds like there is a gear clunking.it does not turn smooth as one would think that it would.

There will be a drag on it; however, not a clunking. You need to remove the driveshaft and see if the noise is coming from the transfer case or the front axle.
