how hard would it be for me to replace the heater system myself. also how costly would it be for me to have a mechanic do it

heater core? if thats what you mean its bout 7 hours in a shop. which is a decent chunk of change. you yourself can do it if you pay attention to detail. take pictures, mark things and take yoru time!
