We always recommend staying with direct replacement parts. Here is why. WHen you change engine like you described, everything needs changed. The computer, mounts, possible transmission, wiring harness, vacuum lines. After everything is changed, it still never seems to work correctly. Then you end up with sensor problems.
If you have specific questions, let me know. As far as your idea, the larger engine would be better because of the truck's weight. Actually, you may even get better fuel mileage, but it isn't worth the effort and expense.
