What kind of scanner are you using? Some of the pins in the OBD2 connector are standardized per federal mandate. Other pins are used at the manufacturer's discretion. If you're using the popular Snapon MT2500, (red brick), there are different "personality keys" for different vehicles that must be inserted in the scanner's plug.
Some aftermarket code readers are only designed to work on certain vehicles, typically all models from one manufacturer.
