2001 Dodge Ram Engine lurches

What would cause the engine to lurch and the RPM's to spikle and drop when trying to acellerate? Check engine light is on and the transmission seems to be fine.

When the Check Engine light is on, a diagnostic fault code has been memorized in the engine computer. You need to have that code read. It will indicate the circuit or system with the problem, not necessarily the specific part.
