Engine Performance problem
2000 Dodge Ram V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 with a dead fuel pump. Was quoted $850 for repair at local shop. I found part online for $200. Why would it cost this much to repair? Am i being ripped off?

Hi:
the fuel tank needs to be removed to replace it, so that takes time. However, that does seem high. How many hours labor are they charging you for?

We bickered with the repair shop and ended up getting the job done for $600 total, parts and labor. They were charging us $600 for pump initially and 200 for labor until we told them we found pump online for 1/3 the cost. Then when I called local parts stores, I actually found the one that the garage ordered the part from and they told me the price they were charging the garage. The garage was marking up the part almost $400. When we threatened to tow our truck elsewhere they did better on the price for us. It shouldn't have to be this hard to get good, honest service, you know?

Hi:
I'm glad you got it fixed. I agree with you. People take advantage. Listen, if you have questions in the future, let us know. We will be happy to guide you and provide any advice we can. We aren't here to rip anyone off and don't benefit from price increases.

Take care,

Joe
